You also create a "Notepad dummy" app (or update it if you already have one), with a detection method that checks if the DisplayVersion in the registry is less than "8.5.7". You create an app for it, with a detection method that checks if the DisplayVersion in the registry equals "8.5.7". Let's say you're deploying Notepad++ 8.5.7. I use a "dummy" application for this, with a detection method that detects all old versions of the app I want to update, and then use supersedence to update those versions automatically. As a general rule, if someone has flair, they almost definitely know what they're talking about.
